High School H.I.V Case Causing Concern

Lauren Leamanczyk

SOUTH MILWAUKEE – Parents in South Milwaukee are worried after learning about a teen who may have spread the H.I.V to other high school students.

According to a search warrant filed by South Milwaukee Police, two teenage girls reported having unprotected intimate contact with the 18-year-old man. Later, his aunt told the girls, her nephew was H.I.V positive. The warrant seeks access to the teen’s medical records.

Dawn Piastowski’s daughter came home from school and told her about the risk after hearing rumors. Piastowski says she hasn’t been able to get any clear answers from the district.

She believes her daughter is safe.

“She didn’t associate with any of them. I’m glad she didn’t, but that doesn’t deter the fear,” Plastowski said.

Still, Piastowski worries that other students may have been at risk through open cuts or sores.

“I know how the disease can be spread and how it can’t, but don’t hide this from children,” Plastowski said.

South Milwaukee High School declined to comment citing student privacy concerns.

Other parents say this is a reminder to talk to their kids about the dangers of intercourse, H.I.V and A.I.D’S.

“There’s a lot of kids not participating in intercourse and there’s kids using safe intercourse procedures,” said Maurice Lashley, “but then you have the few who stray away and that’s the danger to our community.”

The teen has not been charged with any crime. Police are investigating whether his alleged actions rose to the level of recklessly endangering safety.
